The Difficulty of Estimating Phase

Phase is a relatively estimated quantity, but how do we decide what it is estimated relative to? We examine this question through three methods and three case studies and make the case for confidence interval estimation for phase.

State Space Model for Real-Time Phase Estimation

We model rhythms as a damped harmonic oscillator driven by noise and use a state space model to track phase in real-time. This model does not have the sinusoidal expectations of most real-time phase estimators.

Cortical Slow Oscillations Drive Spikes that can Disrupt Spindles

Sleep-instantiated epilepsies frequently co-occur with cognitive dysfunction. What is the nature of the disruption to thalamic sleep oscillations critical to sleep-dependent memory consolidation by epileptic dynamics?
